Facebook Messenger Gets Scam Warnings to Help Users Avoid Potentially Harmful Interactions

Facebook Messenger Gets Scam Warnings to Help Users Avoid Potentially Harmful Interactions

Facebook on Thursday said that its Messenger app will be watching behind the scenes for scammers using the smartphone communication system.

Safety notices will pop up in Messenger text chats if activity taking place in the background is deemed suspicious by artificial intelligence software, according to director of privacy and safety product management Jay Sullivan.

He said the new safety feature “will help millions of people avoid potentially harmful interactions and possible scams without compromising their privacy.”

The feature began rolling out to the Messenger app tailored for Android-powered smartphones in March and will head to Messenger on iPhones next week, according to Facebook.

“Too often people interact with someone online they think they know or trust, when it’s really a scammer or imposter,” Sullivan said.

“These accounts can be hard to identify at first and the results can be costly.”

Artificial intelligence software scans for scammers based on account behaviour, such as sending messages in bulk targeting demographics or geographies, according to Facebook.

Warning notices pop up before people respond to messages of possibly dubious origins.

Since the feature does not involve looking at what is in messages, it should continue to add a layer of safety when Messenger takes to encrypted missives as planned by Facebook.

“As we move to end-to-end encryption, we are investing in privacy-preserving tools like this to keep people safe without accessing message content,” Sullivan said.

Messenger already uses software tools to fight spam and thwart efforts by adults to contact minors they don’t appear to know.

Messenger has been ramping up capabilities and security as use of online tools to communicate and socialise surges due to restrictions of movement during the pandemic.

Facebook recently unveiled a new video chat service with virtual “rooms” where people can pop in to visit friends, aiming at users turning to the popular Zoom platform during the pandemic.

TikTok Rating Drops to 1.2 Stars on Android Following CarryMinati Roast, Faizal Siddiqui ‘Acid Attack’ Video

TikTok Rating Drops to 1.2 Stars on Android Following CarryMinati Roast, Faizal Siddiqui ‘Acid Attack’ Video

TikTok rating is down to 1.2 stars on Google Play Store after getting hammered by the supporters of YouTuber CarryMinati and the controversy surrounding a video from the platform’s popular creator Faizal Siddiqui. Both CarryMinati fans and people miffed with the Siddiqui TikTok video accused of glorifying acid attacks on women are leaving 1-star reviews for TikTok on Android as well as on the Apple App Store. Other 1-star comments also called out TikTok as a Chinese app, and blamed China for COVID-19. The average TikTok rating on Apple App Store is down to 3.5 stars from 4.5 stars earlier.

TikTok’s rating on the app stores is likely to slide even further over the coming days as hashtags like #IndiansAgainstTikTok are currently trending. Apple App Store that initially seemed unaffected by 1-star reviews as there are significantly lower number of iPhone users in the country than Android, is finally showing some impact. After days of 1-star ratings, the average rating on iOS went down to 3.5 stars.

Same as the Apple App Store, TikTok’s Google Play Store listing is flooded with 1-star reviews. As mentioned, this drop in TikTok rating can be attributed to followers of YouTuber CarryMinati, after the creator released a video titled YouTube vs TikTok – The End, part of an ongoing feud between TikTok creators and YouTubers. In this video, the CarryMinati roasted TikTok creators, especially Amir Siddiqui. CarryMinati’s video went viral, hogging over 75 million views before being taken down for violating YouTube’s terms of service. The video also helped the YouTuber gain around 8 million new subscribers. More than new subscribers for CarryMinati, this video led hundreds if not thousands of the YouTuber’s followers to TikTok’s app listings to leave 1-star reviews to show their dislike for the platform and help prove that somehow YouTube was better than TikTok. These followers also shared YouTube vs TikTok memes and other content on social media, rallying even more people to do the same.

While YouTube vs TikTok fever was still in its prime, a video from TikTok creator Faizal Siddiqui surfaced on social media and it was accused of glorifying acid attacks on women. The video garnered criticism from all over, including celebrities, politicians, and National Commission for Women, forcing Tiktok to suspend the creator’s account and remove the copies of the video from its platform. Siddiqui himself had removed the video after the uproar and apologised for it. This video has further driven people to find way to show their dislike of the short-video app and they are doing the same by voicing their opinions on social media and by rating the app 1-star on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The not-so-great image of China among part of Indian population because of various reasons is another driver behind these 1-star reviews. TikTok parent Bytedance is headquartered in Beijing.

Swiggy, Zomato Start Doorstep Delivery of Alcohol in Rachi Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Swiggy, Zomato Start Doorstep Delivery of Alcohol in Rachi Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Swiggy and Zomato have both started doorstep delivery of alcohol in Jharkhand. Alcohol delivery went live in Ranchi today after obtaining necessary approvals from the state government and this will be extended to other cities within the state over the coming days. To order alcohol via Swiggy, the company is adding a ‘Wine Shops’ category on the app, while Zomato too is expected to add a new category.

To prevent misuse, Swiggy told Gadgets 360 that orders require mandatory age verification and user authentication. Age verification is done by uploading a government ID, and sending a selfie that is then compared for authentication. The customer is then verified at the time of delivery using an OTP.

“There is also a capping on the order quantity to ensure a customer does not order alcohol above the prescribed limit as per the state law,” Swiggy said.

Alcohol-orders will require mandatory age verification and user authentication

Anuj Rathi, Vice President of Products at Swiggy, said, “By enabling home delivery of alcohol in a safe and responsible manner, we can generate additional business for retail outlets while solving the problem of overcrowding, thereby promoting social distancing.”

Zomato also confirmed to Gadget 360 that the company has started doorstep delivery of alcohol in Ranchi. The food delivery company is yet to reveal how it plans to carry user identification while delivering alcohol. Zomato also revealed that the alcohol delivery service will be extended to other cities in Jharkhand in the coming days.

This marks a major shift in the food delivery industry as there is currently no legal provision for home deliveries of alcohol in India, something that industry body International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI) has been lobbying to change.

Xiaomi to Launch RedmiBook on May 26 Along With Redmi 10X Phone, Redmi TV Series; RedmiBook Specifications Leaked

Xiaomi to Launch RedmiBook on May 26 Along With Redmi 10X Phone, Redmi TV Series; RedmiBook Specifications Leaked

RedmiBook, the laptop from Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand, is expected to get new models in just a few days. Redmi was expected to launch three new RedmiBook models by the end of this month as suggested by listings on a Chinese e-retailer. But Lu Weibing, General Manager of Redmi Brand, revealed that the new RedmiBook will launch in China on May 26, alongside the Redmi 10X phone. Key specifications present in two of the three RedmiBook models have also been leaked. Two images with the leaked specifications for the TIMI TM1951 and TIMI TM1953 model numbers, rumoured to be two of the RedmiBook models, were shared by a tipster on Twitter and they hint at the processor, clock speeds, and other specifications.

Weibing shared a post on Weibo along with a poster revealing the May 26 launch date for the RedmiBook, alongside the Redmi 10X. The digital event will start at 2pm (11:30am IST). The post states, “Small screens for games are not fun, and large screens for offices are not portable. What size screen is the perfect size for both” (translated). This sounds like a hint at the new 16-inch RedmiBook model that was among the three listed on Chinese e-retailer JD.com.

According to the two images in a tweet by tipster @_rogame, two of the RedmiBook variants come with model number TIMI TM1951 and TIMI TM1953. Both of these models have 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage and while this was previously leaked through the listing on JD.com, the tweet tell us the 16GB RAM is DDR4 with 2,666MHz clock speed and the 512GB storage is a Samsung PM881 Sata SSD.

Talking about the TIMI TM1951 model, the image of the specifications shows it is powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor which is a six-core chipset designed with the 7nm architecture. The base clock is said to be 2.4GHz while the turbo clock speed is said to be 3.9GHz. The TIMI TM1951 model also comes with 64-bit version of Windows 10.

The other RedmiBook, model number TIMI TM1953, is apparently powered by the eight core AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor. The base clock is 2GHz while the boost clock is 4.1GHz. It also comes with a 64-bit version of Windows 10. Both the laptops seem to have the same power draw at 15W.

Coming to the Redmi 10X, it will be powered by the newly unveiled MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC with 5G support. It has also been tipped to have a 4G variant as well. The 5G variant may come in 6GB + 64GB, 6GB + 128GB, 8GB + 128GB, and 8GB + 256GB configurations and Dark Blue, Gold, Silver, and Violet colour options. On the other hand, the 4G variant may come in 4GB + 128GB and 6GB + 128GB configurations with Green, Sky Blue, and White colour options.

Aside from the RedmiBook and Redmi 10X, Xiaomi is also going to launch a new series of TVs under the Redmi brand on May 26. They are named Redmi TV X50, Redmi TV X55, and Redmi TV X65. There is no information available for the three TV models as of yet.

Amazon Food Delivery Service Launched in India, Rollout Begins in Bengaluru

Amazon Food Delivery Service Launched in India, Rollout Begins in Bengaluru

Amazon Food has debuted in India as Amazon’s answer to Swiggy and Zomato. The new food delivery service by the US e-commerce giant has initially been started in Bengaluru to allow customers order prepared food from local restaurants and cloud kitchens. Amazon has constructed its proprietary hygiene certification bar, which is important as people are avoiding food deliveries to a large extent due to the growing coronavirus outbreak in the country. The company has also claimed that it is “adhering to the highest standards of safety” to convince people to use its platform even during the pandemic.

An Amazon spokesperson said in a statement that the company has started its food delivery service on the basis of customer feedback. The new service is also aimed to help local businesses, especially restaurants that are facing hardships due to the national lockdown that has restricted restaurants from serving food at their locations.

“We are launching Amazon Food in select Bengaluru pin codes allowing customers to order from handpicked local restaurants and cloud kitchens that pass our high hygiene certification bar,” the spokesperson said in a statement emailed to Gadgets 360. “We are adhering to the highest standards of safety to ensure our customers remain safe while having a delightful experience.”

Amazon is yet to provide clarity on the supported pin codes and its criteria to select restaurants and cloud kitchens.

A report back in February mentioned that Amazon was planning to launch its food delivery service in the country. Some sources familiar with the development told Gadgets 360 that there was some delay due to the lockdown that the government imposed in March to limit the coronavirus outbreak.

Eligible customers have started getting the dedicated Amazon Food store on their existing Amazon app to order food online. The experience is in line with what is there on Swiggy and Zomato.

Tougher time for Swiggy and Zomato?
Amazon’s entrance in the food delivery space in India will make the competition tougher for Swiggy and Zomato. The two companies were settling into a duopoly after the exit of Uber Eats in January, when Zomato acquired Uber’s food delivery business in the country. But both Swiggy and Zomato recently laid off some of their existing staff to overcome the revenue loss they faced due to the COVID-19 situation. With deep pocketed competition like Amazon coming into the space, the challenge will only increase for the homegrown delivery leaders.

Zomato Revises Reviews and Ratings System, Will Show Separate Delivery and Dining Ratings

Zomato Revises Reviews and Ratings System, Will Show Separate Delivery and Dining Ratings

Zomato has updated its reviews and ratings system and will now offer separate Delivery and Dining ratings. With this change, the company is trying to incorporate some of the feedback it has received from users as well as restaurant owners, the Gurugram-based restaurant aggregator said in a blog post on Thursday. Users will see the two ratings on the restaurant pages, in black and red colour scheme. Zomato will offer the ratings on a contextual basis, which means there won’t both Delivery and Dining ratings for cloud restaurants.

The ratings change by Zomato is currently live in India, United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. The company hasn’t revealed any plans to expand the system to other markets. However, it mentioned in the blog post that in the rest of its markets, it will continue to show a single unified rating that will be powered by an improved algorithm.

Zomato has started showing Delivery and Dining ratings

Zomato asked its users and restaurant partners to provide feedback on the new ratings system in February. “However, as the food delivery industry matured, we have started noticing a significant disparity between the average dining rating, and the average delivery rating for the same restaurant,” Zomato Co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal had said at that time.

The change in the ratings comes amid the coronavirus outbreak and nationwide lockdown, both of which have severely hampered restaurant operations across the country. However, it will certainly be useful in cases when users want to know how good a restaurant is in terms of offering deliveries as people can still order food deliveries through Zomato and other food delivery apps at most locations in the country.

You need to update your Zomato app to see the new ratings. There are Delivery ratings in red and Dining ratings in black colour.

Algorithm improvements
In addition to its new ratings system, Zomato has improved its algorithm to “identify and remove fake reviews comprehensively”. Zomato’s Global Head for New Products and Growth Riddhi Jain said in the blog post that the company noticed bad actors in the system that attempt to make bogus reviews which ultimately impact the market.

In some cases, Jain noted that users offer five star reviews in exchange for money or free meals, restaurants approach users with a high Foodie Level on the platform to write positive reviews, and PR agencies farm users to write reviews for their clients. All these bad actors will be identified “retrospectively” through the latest change in the algorithm, the executive claimed.

“If a restaurant has engaged in review solicitation of any kind in the past, they will see a negative impact on their ratings with immediate effect,” Jain said.

Zomato will also add a banner on the listing of the restaurants who demonstrate “a repeated pattern of solicitation”. This will help users identify those restaurants at a glance and place orders accordingly. Moreover, the change seems similar to what the company announced last year as well.

This is notably not the first time when Zomato has improved its ratings system to limit fake reviews. The company made some changes in its algorithm back in 2016 and 2018 as well. However, some people found loopholes in those changes.

Amazon Puts Heat on E-Sports Giants With Crucible

Amazon Puts Heat on E-Sports Giants With Crucible

Amazon launched an assault on Fortnite and other eSports giants Wednesday with team shooter Crucible, aiming to expand its territory in the world of game playing.

Release of the free online title by Amazon Game Studios comes as people staying home to avoid the deadly coronavirus turn to video games for entertainment and social contact.

Crucible will challenge the dominance of Fortnite, Overwatch, and League of Legends, which have won legions of fans, with online match-ups pitting characters with various abilities or weaponry against one another.

It is tailored for play on Windows-powered personal computers, playing to the strength of Amazon-owned Twitch, a popular platform for streaming games and commentary.

The Steam gaming website promised the title would be available midday (2000 GMT) Wednesday in California.

It is the first major title from Amazon Game Studios, which is also working on a multiplayer online game based on the Lord of the Rings.

The developers call Crucible a “team-based action shooter driven by the choices you make,” featuring alien adversaries.

The launch comes as other tech giants make their own game moves.

Google recently launched its streaming game service Stadia, and Apple Arcade offers titles for iOS-powered devices.

Facebook last month launched a stand-alone app allowing users to create and watch livestreams of games.

And Microsoft recently offered a glimpse at games for its new Xbox console, coming this year, which it hopes will help it compete with Sony’s leading PlayStation devices.

Microsoft has not yet announced a release date.

Sony is also to release its PlayStation 5 model later this year. PlayStation 4 consoles have trounced Xbox One in sales since the rival gaming systems launched in late 2013.

Amazon Game Studios two years ago pulled the plug on development of Breakaway, which was to be its first new title in the hot e-sport arena of video game play as spectator sport.

US online retail giant Amazon snatched up Twitch and its huge audience for live-streamed gaming in 2014 for nearly $1 billion (roughly Rs. 7,579 crores).

Zoom Meeting App Said to Breach Privacy, Plea in Supreme Court Claims Seeking to Ban

Zoom Meeting App Said to Breach Privacy, Plea in Supreme Court Claims Seeking to Ban

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking a ban on the usage of video conferencing application Zoom by Indian citizens until formulation of an appropriate legislation, claiming the app breaches privacy.

The petition, filed by one Harsh Chugh, sought a ban on Zoom app claiming lack of Internet safety of the application and contended that the software application poses a threat to privacy of the individuals using it and also breaches cyber security.

The petition said that Zoom app is not safe and does not have end-to-end encryption and is violating the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Interception, Monitoring and Decryption of Information) Rules, 2009.

The CEO of Zoom has already apologised publicly and accepted the app to be faulty in terms of providing a secure environment digitally which is against the norms of cyber security, the plea said.

Chugh, in his plea, said that being a homemaker and remote worker (takes tuition classes through Zoom), he is concerned about cases of hacking and cyber breaches, which are being incessantly reported.

The penetration of offending software increasing with each day have pan India ramifications, the plea said.

It said that there is a need for a legislation to be put in place in order to effectuate a standard regulation to safeguard the rights of citizens as has been brought to light by various leaders across the world.

“It is important to realise how Zoom consistently violates its duty to implement and maintain reasonable security practices, and misleads consumers about the security benefits of the product. Zoom has targeted consumers, businesses, and schools,” the plea said.

“Rather than lending a hand to people in need, Zoom violates the privacy of its millions of users by misusing and exploiting their personal information, and falsely, deceptively, and misleadingly advertising fictitious security benefits of the programme,” it added.

Apple, Google’s New COVID 19 Contact Tracing API Won’t Work With Aarogya Setu

Apple, Google’s New COVID 19 Contact Tracing API Won’t Work With Aarogya Setu

Aarogya Setu is not compatible with the new contact tracing standard created jointly by Apple and Google. India’s COVID-19 contact tracing app Aarogya Setu has been registered over 10 crore times, but some of its features mean that it may not work with Google and Apple’s privacy preserving solution to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The standard made by the tech giants is based on guidelines to enable contact tracing without impacting privacy of individuals. Authorities in as many as 23 countries have reportedly showed interest in the technology developed by Apple and Google. This is means as a temporary solution, unlike Aarogya Setu that has new features coming for the longer term.

Location tracking for contact tracing
One of the key differences between the Aarogya Setu app and the technology designed by Apple and Google is the location tracking that is there on the former, but is prohibited on the latter. Location tracking has raised many privacy concerns from experts in India. However, the government is against stopping location data tracking.

The Apple-Google collaboration has also made it clear that users will have the option to turn off contact tracing at any time by uninstalling the dedicated app or disable exposure notification.

In addition to location tracking, Apple and Google have made it clear in their guidelines that other than the random Bluetooth identifiers, no data will be shared by the system with public health authorities unless a user has reported a positive diagnosis of COVID-19 or a user has been notified through the app that they’ve come into a contact with a COVID-19 patient.
